MAKING CHANGE HAPPEN IN HIGHER EDUCATION

University Education anywhere in the world is an integral part of any country’s growth and development. This is the reason why Governments across the globe put a lot of emphasis on improving the processes and practices of their institutions of higher learning, especially universities.

Overview

The Government of Kenya has taken a central role in ensuring that higher education in Kenya is of high quality standards, in line with the ever-changing environment. In collaboration with the African Development Fund, the Government has put in place initiatives that support and enhance the quality and relevance of higher education.

Following the enactment of the Universities ACT, 2012 and the development of the sessional paper No.14 “A policy Framework on Education and training on reforming education and training sectors in Kenya.” It is critical that University councils and Management familiarize themselves with these new developments to remain afloat in their operations

This training on strategic management in Universities was occasioned by the emerging challenges in University leadership and governance, as well as the new global trends in higher education circles.

Key concerns include matters related to quality assurance and maintenance of high standards in University education.

The main aim of this training therefore is to improve decision-making processes in the universities, with a view to enhancing efficiency, and effectiveness in their operations. This would translate not only into good value for public investments in the sector, but also relevance and growth.

This would guarantee the Universities to deliver effectively on their core mandate of teaching, research and service to society.

The training will focus on key areas which include; Corporate governance aspects, sensitization on Universities Act No. 42, 2012 and Policy Framework for Education and Training- Reforming Education and Training in Kenya (Sessional Paper No. 14, 2012); financial management and resource mobilization; GOK Public Procurement and Disposal Act and procurement regulations; Roles of University Governing Bodies

(Councils, chairman of Council, Management, Chancellor, Vice Chancellor); and overview of 2010 Kenyan Constitution with reference to university education.
